What to know about ranking higher on the search engines.

Each search engine may work differently but they all have a robot, spider, or crawler that goes out and searches for content on billions of pages. Each robot (google) will go out and search for terms that are related to each search a person makes. Example: if you have the term "web design" located on the top of your page the robot will locate it and send it up to be shown when a person who searches for it. Every page must be indexed before it can be searched for terms. This is where you submit your URL to the search engine. Some engines don't require this.

Before you start to submit your page, I would recommend that you add meta tags with keywords and descriptions on it. Make sure that your title is relevant to the search and ALT phrases on your page is good. Though some search engines such as Google does not use the meta tags, it's a good habit to use them. Do a search on meta tags, there are many different tags. Some tells the robot to come back in so many days. You can also exclude pages to be searched.

There are three search engines that are most popular. They are Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Each of these are the main engines that often drives others. Make sure that you are using the developers tools in Google to push your site as high as possible. Tell the robot to disallow the errors but make sure that the robot can get read your page. Also have your sitemap ready and available for Google. This will help you with your indexing reviews. Google takes a while to index your page. Just be patient. Don't do what I did, accidentally removed my page before it got indexed. Lost my ranking. Now working on it again. Sucks! Anyway, there is a lot to learn about ranking.

Most importantly is to keep your page updated with currently information. Also placing your links on other sites will increase your rankings by driving in more traffic. An active site often get the rankings.
